Computerized Diagnostics

Computerized diagnostics means connecting a scan tool to your vehicle's onboard computers to read stored trouble codes and live sensor data, then testing to confirm the cause. Sully's Auto Repair in Huntington Beach performs computerized diagnostics on check engine lights and other warning lights.

Signs it is time to bring it in

  • The check engine light is on and steady
  • The check engine light is flashing
  • Rough idle, hesitation or stalling
  • Fuel mileage has dropped for no clear reason
  • An ABS, airbag, traction or other warning light is on

A code is a clue, not a diagnosis

A trouble code tells you which system reported a problem. It does not tell you which part failed. The same code can be set by a bad sensor, a wiring fault, a vacuum leak, or a mechanical problem. Replacing the part named in the code without testing is how people end up paying for repairs that do not fix the car.

How we approach it

We read the codes and the data behind them, test the suspected circuit or component, and confirm the cause. Then we explain what we found and give you a written estimate before any repair begins.

Computerized Diagnostics: questions and answers

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it is usually safe to drive for a short time, but have it checked soon. If the light is flashing, the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration, and get it in as soon as you can.
Does a trouble code tell you which part to replace?
No. A code points to a system or circuit, not a failed part. Testing is what identifies the actual cause.
Why did my check engine light turn off by itself?
The computer turns the light off if the fault does not reappear over several drive cycles. The code usually stays stored, so we can still read what happened. An intermittent problem is worth checking before it becomes a constant one.
Do you warranty your repairs?
Yes. We back our repairs with a 12-month, 12,000-mile warranty.
Can I get same-day service?
In most cases, yes. How long a job takes depends on the repair and on parts, so call (714) 841-1245 and we will tell you what to expect for your vehicle.
Will I get an estimate before any work is done?
Yes. California law requires a written estimate and your authorization before repair work begins. Nothing is done to your vehicle until you approve it.
