Engine Overhauls
An engine overhaul means taking the engine apart, measuring and inspecting its internal parts, replacing what is worn, and reassembling it to specification. Sully's Auto Repair in Huntington Beach performs complete engine overhauls as well as general engine repairs.
Signs it is time to bring it in
- A deep knocking sound from the engine
- Blue or white smoke from the exhaust
- The engine uses oil between changes
- A clear loss of power
- Oil that looks milky, or coolant that keeps disappearing
- The engine overheats repeatedly
Overhaul, replace or repair?
A worn or damaged engine does not leave you with only one choice. Depending on what failed, the right answer may be a targeted repair, a complete overhaul, or a replacement engine. The vehicle’s overall condition, parts availability and cost all matter. We inspect the engine, explain what we found, and lay out the options with a written estimate so the decision is yours.
Stop driving if it is knocking or overheating
Continuing to drive an engine that is knocking, overheating or low on oil can turn a repairable problem into a destroyed engine. If it is safe to do so, pull over and call.
Engine Overhauls: questions and answers
- Is it better to overhaul or replace an engine?
- It depends on what failed, the condition of the rest of the vehicle, the availability of parts, and the cost of each route. An inspection comes first; then we give you the options with a written estimate.
- How long does an engine overhaul take?
- It varies with the engine, the extent of the damage, any machine work required, and how quickly parts arrive. We give you a realistic timeframe once we have inspected it.
- What does white smoke from the exhaust mean?
- A little white vapor on a cold start is normal condensation. Thick white smoke that continues once the engine is warm usually means coolant is entering the combustion chamber, often from a failed head gasket. Have it checked before driving further.
- Do you warranty your repairs?
- Yes. We back our repairs with a 12-month, 12,000-mile warranty.
- Can I get same-day service?
- In most cases, yes. How long a job takes depends on the repair and on parts, so call (714) 841-1245 and we will tell you what to expect for your vehicle.
- Will I get an estimate before any work is done?
- Yes. California law requires a written estimate and your authorization before repair work begins. Nothing is done to your vehicle until you approve it.
