- What should I tell the shop when I call?
- Tell us what the car is doing, when it started, whether it happens hot or cold, at speed or at idle, and which warning lights are on. The more specific you are, the faster we can find the cause.
- Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
- If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it is usually safe to drive for a short time, but have it checked soon. If the light is flashing, ease off and get it in as soon as you can, because a severe misfire can damage the catalytic converter.
- Will using an independent shop void my factory warranty?
- No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer generally cannot require you to use the dealer for routine maintenance in order to keep your warranty in effect. Keep your service records.
